Campos del Rio is located in the region of the River Mula and close to the beautiful city of Murcia.
Furthermore, Campos del Rio dates back to the 11th century and the first written records are dated 1257.
Campos del Rio was an Arabic settlement and until the Castilian re-conquest in 1243 Campos del Rio had a rich historical history.
Alphonse X the Wise granted privileges and Campos del Rio became a part of the town of Mula.
Later the town was handed over to Sancho Manuel in exchange for an annual income of 1,000 maravedis (an ancient Spanish currency)
Henceforth, a noble family from Albacete, the Ayalas family, then inherited the town in exchange for a tribute payment every year.
Campos del Rio later was almost completely depopulated with the expulsion of the Moors in1614.
Development began in earnest in 1820 and with the Constitution of the Courts of Cadiz, Campos del Rio was declared an independent borough. Additionally, gaining its own Town Hall in 1836.
The economy of this area is agriculture and cattle breeding.
Since ancient times, the huerta (the market garden and orchard region) has spread out along both banks of the river Mula.
Nowadays the irrigated area is growing continuously and its principal crops are peach trees, orange trees and also apricot trees.
Many Campos del Rio residents work in the canning industry and also cattle rearing is also important employment.
Additionally, Murcia goats are bred in abundance.
